Nature Launches a TikTok Account to Explain Science
Short videos force tough choices about what context and caveats survive when research meets a 15-second format.

Nature opened a TikTok account. Founded in 1869, this journal has published not only peer-reviewed1 research papers but also science news, commentary, and editorials. In its June 2, 2026 editorial, it explained its move into TikTok by arguing that scientists and publishers need to adapt to how people are now consuming information.
What caught my attention in this news was the question of how to explain science briefly. To properly understand a research finding, you need to know what subjects and conditions it was derived from. So how accurately can that kind of information be conveyed while also grabbing attention through a short video?
Readers Who Get Their News from Social Media and Video
In the Reuters Institute’s Digital News Report 2025, 44% of respondents aged 18-24 named social media and video networks as their main source of news. This reflects a shift where people encounter information through the platforms they already use daily, rather than visiting news sites directly.
Across all surveyed markets, the share watching social media news videos rose from 52% in 2020 to 65% in 2025. Combining online news video across all channels, the figure climbed from 67% to 75%. In weekly U.S. news consumption, social/video platforms led at 54%, ahead of TV at 50% and news websites/apps at 48%. Since respondents can use multiple channels, these shares aren’t mutually exclusive.
How younger readers view traditional news outlets matters too. The Institute’s 2026 report presents qualitative findings showing that some young readers find news distant from their lives or hard to understand. That doesn’t mean this entire generation rejects traditional media or trusts every individual creator more.
The 2025 report is an online survey of roughly 100,000 people across 48 markets. 40% of respondents said they sometimes or often avoid the news. The reasons for avoidance vary — from negative emotions to information overload. For younger readers, I think adequately explaining background context and terminology is also a challenge.
These findings help explain why Nature has expanded its focus to the platforms readers actually use. But news-consumption surveys alone can’t tell you how to make a science video succeed. That requires separately figuring out the format that fits the content you want to deliver.
Can a Short Video Still Include Sources and Caveats?
If you picture making a video that runs about three minutes, the time budget feels tight. But three minutes isn’t actually TikTok’s upload ceiling. Longer videos are possible, and creators can still cite sources through on-screen captions or the description field.
It’s hard to explain everything—background, methods, sample, results, and limitations—in a single video. So creators have to narrow down what to cover. One option is to leave one or two sentences describing the study population and its main limitations, paired with the paper’s title or a verifiable source. Being short is no excuse for omitting all the information a viewer would need to check the claims.
Looking at actual research, the problem isn’t the video’s length itself but the absence of sourcing and risk disclosure.
A study by Ricardo Morais and Clara Fernandes, published in the Journal of Science Communication in 2026, analyzed up to 10 recent videos each from 21 selected science-content accounts. It found that in many videos, it was hard to verify the source of claims or images. This sample can’t be generalized to all of TikTok, and the absence of a cited source doesn’t automatically mean a claim is false. Still, it makes it harder for viewers to check the evidence. The researchers themselves recommend providing sources both in the description and within the video.
A study by Brooke Nickel and colleagues, published in JAMA Network Open in 2025, analyzed 982 Instagram and TikTok posts covering five types of tests associated with overtesting concerns—full-body MRI and testosterone testing among them. 87.1% of the posts mentioned benefits, while only 14.7% mentioned potential harms. 68% were classified as having authors with a financial interest tied to the test. The combined follower count of roughly 194.2 million is a sum across accounts, not the number of unique users who actually saw the posts.
This study analyzed posts about specific medical tests. It doesn’t represent all health information or the overall rate of misinformation on TikTok. What’s worth noting is that explaining only a test’s benefits while leaving out harms and evidence deprives users of the information they need to make a judgment.
Recommendation algorithms and the competition for attention can certainly shape how content gets made. But that doesn’t mean these studies have proven that explaining sources or limitations necessarily reduces view counts—that causal claim isn’t established here. What information to leave in within a short window, and how to disclose conflicts of interest, remain choices within the creator’s control.
User confidence is also worth examining. A 2024 JMIR Infodemiology study surveyed women in the US aged 18-29 and others, analyzing responses from 1,026 people with TikTok experience. About 98% of them believed health misinformation exists to some degree. On average, respondents also showed a third-person effect2—rating others as more susceptible to influence than themselves. Not every respondent claimed they personally could never be fooled.
Providing Trustworthy Explanations on the Same Platforms
Whether these problems mean scientific institutions should avoid platforms altogether is a separate question.
The Nature editorial suggests that changes in how news is produced and distributed should be treated as an opportunity. I read this as arguing that trustworthy scientific explanations need to be delivered where people actually encounter information.
According to the Reuters Institute’s 2026 report, in a 2025 survey, 35% of 18-24 year-olds said they were very or extremely interested in news, compared to 52% of those 55 and older. But while there’s an overall gap in interest, it isn’t uniform across every topic. Younger men showed higher interest than women in the same age bracket for certain subjects, including science. This shouldn’t be stretched into a claim that young people as a whole are highly interested in science, or that they simply dislike the news format.

Scientific institutions have already been offering explanations and videos on Instagram and YouTube. On TikTok, too, they could start with short explanations and guide viewers toward the underlying research. Regardless of the platform, what matters is making it possible for users to actually find the source.
The WHO also announced in September 2024 that it would partner with TikTok for a year to provide health information backed by scientific evidence, using a network of health content creators along with training. The partnership announcement itself can’t be taken as proof that misinformation actually declined, but it’s an example of an institution engaging with a platform.
Platforms have their own work to do. They could make it easier to display sources and conflicts of interest, and improve features for reporting misinformation or verifying corrections. Only when these features actually work, alongside creators’ own efforts, does it become easier for users to judge information for themselves.
Oswarld’s Lens
Watching Nature’s decision, I found myself thinking back to something I ran into while designing a GTM3 strategy. I once advised a B2B company that compressed a complex technical product explanation into a 30-second video, only to see customer inquiries go up afterward. The video simply didn’t convey enough information, so customers ended up calling in to ask the same questions anyway. That experience taught me that meeting customers on the channels they use and actually answering their questions have to happen together — you can’t do one without the other.
The same problem can show up in science communication. Opening a TikTok account and condensing research findings into something short each require their own kind of preparation. You first need to decide what viewers actually need to know, then split that into what goes in the video and what gets pointed to as supplementary material. Sources and important caveats can’t fall through the cracks in that process.
There’s an example worth looking at in Korea too. DBpia, a site for academic papers and journals, has recently been making active use of its Instagram account, and I think it’s a good model.
Anyone working with specialized knowledge also needs to think about how to help viewers who want to dig deeper after watching a short piece of content. Showing the name of the source material and pointing to an easy path to find it can cut down on the effort of verification considerably.
There’s also good reason to view expert participation favorably. In the JMIR survey I mentioned earlier, respondents said they preferred information from health professionals over that from ordinary users. Preference doesn’t guarantee actual accuracy, but it does give experts reason to explain things on the same platforms. My own view is that Nature would do well to make its videos explain claims well enough to be understood on their own, while also pointing viewers to material where they can check the details further.
Closing
When I think about how science gets explained in short formats, I care about three things.
First, I pay attention to where readers actually encounter the information. More and more people get their science through social media and video, but preferences still vary by age and region.
Second, when you shorten the content, you also need to narrow the scope of what you’re explaining. Rather than leaving only the results, you should briefly describe the study’s subjects and its main limitations, and point to sources readers can check for themselves.
Third, view counts and comprehension aren’t the same thing. Even if something gets seen by a lot of people, if they walk away misunderstanding it, the explanation needs to be improved. That’s a lesson I learned partly from watching inquiries pile up at a company I was advising.
The next time you come across an interesting piece of science on short-form video, try checking the study’s title, the institution behind it, and who the study was actually conducted on. Having a source doesn’t automatically make a claim correct, but it gives you a starting point to compare against the original.
